Taman Negara-The Premier Of National Park

Taman Negara,or National Park,is one of the finest and oldest accessible rainforests in the world. Centrally located in a remote region of Peninsular Malaysia,it offers adventurous travellers an unparalelled opportunity to explore the rich natural wonders of unspoilt rainforest. Much of the park remains as it has been for the past 130 million years or so. Originally set aside as a wildlife reserve in 1925 to protect game species,the park was established in 1939. Today at 4,343 square kilometres (1,676 square miles)it is the largest park on Peninsular Malaysia. Situated in the Tahan Range,it also includes the Peninsula's highest peak,Gunung Tahan(Tahan Mountain) at 2,187 metres(7,173 feet). As the park covers parts of three states,there are several main access routes.

Taman Negara has a variety of attractions to see and experience. The park is home to the original inhabitants of the area,the Orang Asli people,some of whom still follow a traditional semi-nomadic lifesyle of farming,fishing and hunting. They are the only people allowed to hunt and forage for food in the park.

Fishing is a popular recreational activity in most parts of the Taman Negara .Keniam River (Sungai Keniam),upstream from Kuala Tahan is one of the most popular fishing locations on the Pahang State side .
Perkai Lodge,Lubuk Rinching,Lubuk Rawa and Lata Said are really famous and mainly attracts fishing folk .There are over 200 species of fish in the rivers,with the most popular for anglers being the Kelah (Golden mahseer),the Sebarau (Malaysian Jungle Perch),the Tengas (Brook Carp),the Toman (Greater Snakehead),the Baung (Mystus spp) and various species of river fish .
